General Comments

While trying to work on names for these while on our trip, nothing we all really liked came up. Later told that others in the past referred to these as Heckle and Jeckle and decided to retain old names.

Heckle and Jeckle is not a destination route but rather something to do if you wanna see a new place and are not looking for quality canyoneering. The shelf where the two canyons join is a nice spot for a relaxing break and look down at the lake.

The canyon will likely be dry most of the time but has places where some water can accumulate. If recent rains have filled things up you may find a few spots of waist deep water and maybe even a spot where you will get all the way in the water for a moment.  This is why the A(B) rating.

The parking area for Heckle and Jeckle Canyons is in a small turn out on the south side of the road and easy to park a few cars. The road is in overall good condition and easy to travel, but is not at all well used and may be a a little faint in places. There are few landmarks and the road does some odd winding around the area making a verbal description a little difficult. A GPS may be a good idea to be sure you get the proper parking spot.

The route first drops down Heckle Canyon down to a final downclimb to a shelf where the two forks join. Once at the top of that final drop you can evaluate if you feel you will be able to upclimb it and set a hand line for it if you have doubts. Next the route exits out the RDC side of Heckle just up canyon of the downclimb then route finds over to the head of Jeckle Canyon. After descending Jeckle Canyon down to the shelf where the canyons join, you upclimb the drop you evaluated back up into Heckle Canyon. To exit the area you walk out the LDC side of Heckle and rim walk back to the head of Heckle Canyon then reverse the approach route back to the cars. You can mix and match this any way you like but the route described here allows one to evaluate possible issues with the route prior to committing to something that may be too difficult or undesirable.

Warning:
The shelf at the bottom of Heckle and Jeckle is lake level dependent. At very high lake levels the shelf will be filled with water and dropping down to it a bad idea. With the route described here you will have the ability to evaluate water at the shelf while in route before you need to commit to dropping down to it. When we went through on 2017-03-17 the lake level was at 3591 feet and the water was approximately 20 feet below the shelf.  Check here for Lake Powell Water Data.  The highest the lake has been was 3708.34 feet on 07-14-83.

Having 3 ropes of about 80 feet each and a pull cord of 140 feet helps with the logistics of this route. One rope can be left at the upclimb from the shelf at the bottom of the forks to assist with up climbing back into Heckle Canyon. The other two can be taken through Jeckle and used for the final rappel.  Depending on anchor options found you may only need one of the ropes.  However if water prevents some anchors from being used ropes can be tied together and anchored from a Sandtrap or rocks farther up canyon. The joining knot can be tied near the top of the final vertical portion of the rappel. A pull cord of about 130 feet will also be needed. Depending on the skill level of the group and anchor options found, you may not need this much rope.... better safe than sorry.

Driving Directions

To get to the Trailhead

Note:
There is a maze of roads on Ticaboo Mesa making it a good idea to study the map ahead of time and keep a close eye on the map as you drive.

From Hanksville, UT., drive south on highway 95 for 26 miles to the junction of highways 95 and 276.

From the junction, drive south on HWY-276 for 25.6 miles then turn left (east) onto BLM dirt-road 13400 between mile markers 25 and 26 (extTicaboo1).

About 1.5 miles down the dirt road is a junction (TicabooDP-01) to a side road on the right going south.  Turn right at this junction and drive south on a dirt road.

About 1 miles down the road will be a side road (TicabooDP-50) that leaves the main road on the left (east) then loops back to rejoin the main road about 350 feet farther.  Continue south on the main road.

About 1.2 miles farther is a side road (TicabooDP-51) that joins in from the left (east).  Continue south.

About 2.4 farther the road turns sharp left (TicabooDP-52) and goes from traveling south to now traveling southeast then east.

About 1.2 miles farther will be a side road (TicabooDP-53) joining from the right (south).  This is just before reaching Danish Knoll.  Continue east toward Danish Knoll to get to the Smith Fork area.

About 0.5 miles farther is a fork in the road (TicabooDP-54).  To get to the lower section of Smith Fork veer right and continue south east.

Note:
If you were going for canyons in the upper portion of Smith Fork you would veer left at this fork and travel east.

About 0.8 miles farther is a fork in the road (TicabooDP-55). On the way into the lower portion Smith Fork staying right is said to be a smoother drive.  Either fork can be taken as they rejoin about half a mile ahead.

About 0.5 miles farther is where the forked roads rejoin (TicabooDP-56).  Continue past this junction.

About 0.6 miles farther is another fork (TicabooDP-57).  Either fork can be taken since the road rejoins about 0.2 miles farther (TicabooDP-58)

About 0.2 miles the road drops down to cross a low point (pkSmithForkLwr).  There is a wide shallow wash crossing the road here running down to the north east.  Park here where there is plenty of level space to park off to the side of the road.

About 0.2 miles farther is a low point in the road with a wide shallow wash (pkSmithForkLwr) crossing the road.  Continue driving south to go to Grease Monkey or Heckle and Jeckle Canyons.

Note:
You would park here to start Pothoez, Psycho D, Downward Spiral, Friends With Bennies and other canyons.

About 1 mile farther is a road junction on the right (west) at the apex of a sharp left hand bend (almost u-turn) in the road. Continue around the left hand bend and continue east along the main road.

Note:
The exit to the right (west) is a road to a large watering pond about 0.25 miles away.

About 0.5 miles farther the road makes a right bend to travel south again.

About 0.4 miles farther is where you would park to start the Grease Monkey route (pkGMonkey).  There is a shallow drainage crossing the road but no major landmarks to use for navigation. As a navigation aid for the drive in, this spot is about 380 feet before reaching a sharp right hand bend in the road.  If you you go too far and get to the bend you can also park there and to start.

Note:
This is also where you would set the exit vehicle for Friends with Bennies Canyon as it uses the same exit as Grease Monkey Canyon

To continue to Heckle and Jeckle Canyons continue to the sharp left bend in the road then another 0.25 miles to a sharp (almost u-turn) left hand bend in the road.

About 0.7 miles after the sharp left bend is a junction (TicabooDP-62).  Stay to the left (east) on the main road.

Note:
To the right (southeast) is a faint road that is less traveled but joins back with the main road about 400 feet to the south.

About 500 feet farther is a sharp right hand bend in the road (TicabooDP-64) out on a point. Continue south along the road.

About 200 feet farther is where the other end of the faint road joins back into main road (TicabooDP-66). Continue south along the road.

About 0.45 miles farther the the road begins to veer more to the west (TicabooDP-67) and pull farther away from the rim of Smith Fork crossing over shallow drainages to the west.  As the road continues west it is still in good shape but becomes a little less traveled.

About 0.7 miles farther is the parking spot for Heckle and Jeckle Canyons or Slip-N-Slide Canyons (pkHeckleJeckle) which is a parking turnout on the left (south) side of the road. The road is smooth and in pretty good shape but not well travelled. Park here to go to Heckle and Jeckle Canyons.

To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod

No exit vehicle is needed.  This is done as a loop route.

Details

The Approach:
From the parking spot (pkHeckleJeckle) hike southeast across rolling desert for about 0.32 miles to the top of the cliff band overlooking Heckle Canyon and look for a weakness to scramble down.

Scramble down the weakness (Heckle-01) in the rim where the top of Heckle can be see about 800 feet away. Scramble down rubble to the next level and walk rolling slickrock over to the head of Heckle Canyon (yHeckleTp).

The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
From the top of Heckle Canyon (yHeckleTp) shallow V slot begins to form with a mix of walking and a little galumphing over small potholes.

Note: When exiting from here you can follow the approach route back up to the rim or alternately walk west about 500 feet to another weakness where you can also get up to the rim.

About 250 feet down canyon is an easy downclimb (Heckle-02) of about 6 to 8 feet followed by a medium sized pothole that most people can easily bridge over, followed by another downclimb of 6 to 8 feet.  About 120 feet down canyon is rap 1.

Rap 1 (dHeckleR1) anchored using a pack drag and drops about 12 feet down slightly sloped wall. The combination of a pack drag anchor for the top and a partner assist capture at the bottom is a quick fun way to get down this drop. At the bottom is a 4 foot deep pothole to partner assist through with a 6 foot downclimb on the other side, followed by about 100 feet of easy walking and galumphing.

Shortly after is a wide open spot (Heckle-03) where the canyon is escapable on either side. Down canyon is a 200 foot long section with a mix of walking and easy galumphing except one large pothole at the other end.

Shortly down canyon is a large pothole (Heckle-04) to partner assist through with a 6 foot downclimb on the other side. Then a short walk to where the canyon opens up again.

Shortly after the canyon is wide (Heckle-05-EE) and can be escaped on either side before entering deeper slot down canyon.

Shortly after is a drop of about 12 feet (Heckle-06) with a silo like feature that is easily stemmed over. About 60 feet down canyon in this narrow slot is a rappel.

Rap 2 (dHeckleR2) anchored using a Sandtrap and drops about 35 feet into deep slot that is then easily walked for a little over 100 feet to where the canyon opens again.

Shortly down canyon is a few potholes (Heckle-07) as the canyon opens up. These can be bypassed by walking along the LDC (northeast) side.

About 350 feet farther is a moderately difficult upclimb (Heckle-09-Up) in Heckle Canyon which is ascended to exit after dropping down Jeckle Canyon. Climbing back up into Heckle Canyon here is challenging and best done with a hand line set from above. Getting into the bottom of the crack is best done with a partner assist then climbing out the top of the crack gives way to steep slab that is very exposed. When descending Heckle on this route, walk over to this drop and evaluate it for climbing back up. If there is any doubt, set a hand line up from something and leave in place for your return after getting down Jeckle Canyon.

From the top of this drop walk back up canyon about 30 feet to a spot where you can scramble up (Heckle-08-Out) very steep slickrock on the RDC (west) side of the canyon to escape. This upclimb is very steep and only one person needs to do it, who can then provide a hand line for others using a rope of about 80 feet. If you do not like slab style upclimbs, this will feel a bit sketchy.

Note:
Before climbing out here, be sure you walk about 30 feet down canyon to the drop down to the shelf below. You will be climbing back up that drop after getting to the bottom of Jeckle Canyon. If you do not feel confident leave a rope fixed to an anchor to use as a hand line to get up the drop.

From the top of the upclimb out of (Heckle-10) Heckle Canyon to go to Jeckle Canyon. Route find your way southwest along the rim of Jeckle.

From the top of Jeckle Canyon (yJeckleTp) shallow slot begins to form.

About 150 feet down canyon is a challenging downclimb (Jeckle01) of about 8 feet just after a pothole that can be walked around. Aggressive partner assist or pack drag works well here. A hole at the bottom of the drop can be galumphed over.

Over the next 300 feet of canyon is a drop of about 12 feet where you can easily galumph over it and slide down where you comfortably fit followed by a waist deep pothole that can played down through but tall people can bridge over it just before the canyon opens up for about 100 feet before the to last narrows.

Rap 1 in Jeckle Canyon (dJeckleR1a) is anchored suing a sand trap or rocks and uses about 140 feet of rope to get to the bottom. The first 80 feet of the drop is over two downclimbs over shallow potholes before dropping a vertical 60 feet to a large shelf below. The first portion of this drop through the potholes can be downclimbed through easily but anchor options at the vertical part are not easy to find. If using a couple shorter ropes tied together the joining knot can easily be placed near the top of the vertical part as there is lots of room to stand and get on rappel.

If you can find anchors near the top of the vertical part of the drop, then you will need less rope. If the potholes are dry there may be rocks allowing an anchor to be built at the top of just the vertical section.

From the bottom of Jeckle Canyon (yJeckleBt) a large slickrock shelf you can walk between the two forks or over to steep slickrock rolling off to the lake below.

Note:
If the lake is low enough you can get down to this ledge, it is a cool place to hang out. At lake level ?? the lake was approximately 20 feet below the ledge here. If the lake level is too high, this ledge will be filed with water and not a good idea to drop down to.

The Exit:
From the bottom of Heckle Canyon (yHeckleBt) walk over to the bottom of the upclimb up into Heckle Canyon.

Getting up into the bottom of the crack (Heckle-09-Up) is best done with a partner assist then climbing out the top of the crack gives way to steep slab that is very exposed. When descending Heckle on this route, walk over to this drop and evaluate it for climbing back up. If there is any doubt, set a hand line up from something and leave in place for your return after getting down Jeckle Canyon.

Walk up Heckle Canyon about 160 feet and scramble out the RUC/LDC /northeast side where comfortable.  Rim walk about 0.3 miles back ot the head of Heckle Canyon (yHeckleTp).

From the top of Heckle Canyon walk about 800 feet back to the weakness you came down (Heckle-01), go up the weakness then walk desert back to the cars (pkHeckleJeckle).

Challenging downclimb of about 8 feet just after a pothole that can be walked around. Aggressive partner assist or packdrag works well here.
  16. dJeckleR1a          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 37.56378   W -110.63790        Elev: NaN Feet
Rap 1 - Jeckle Canyon. Anchored suing a sand trap or rocks and uses about 140 feet of rope to get to the bottom.

Bottom of Jeckle Canyon on a large slickrock shelf. Once down on this shelf you can walk between the two forks or over to steep slickrock rolling off to the lake below. Note: If the lake is low enough you can get down to this ledge, it is a cool place to hang out. At lake level ?? the lake was approximately 20 feet below the ledge here. If the lake level is too high, this ledge will be filed with water and not a good idea to drop down to.

  20. Heckle-09-Up          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 37.56455   W -110.63774        Elev: NaN Feet
A moderately difficult upclimb in Heckle Canyon which is ascended to exit after dropping down Jeckle Canyon.

  2. Heckle-08-Out          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 37.56463   W -110.63777        Elev: NaN Feet
Spot where you can scramble up very steep slickrock on the RDC (west) side of the canyon to escape. This upclimb is very steep and only one person needs to do it, who can then provide a handline for others using a rope of about 80 feet. If you do not like slab style upclimbs, this will feel a bit sketchy. Note: Before climbing out here, walk about 30 feet down canyon to the drop down to the shelf below. You will be climbing back up that drop after getting to the bottom of Jeckle Canyon. If you do not feel confident leave a rope fixed to an anchor to use as a hand line to get up the drop.
  3. yHeckleTp          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 37.56788   W -110.64026        Elev: 3,890 Feet
Start of Heckle Canyon where shallow V slot begins to form with a mix of walking and a little galumphing over small potholes. Note: When exiting from here you can follow the approach route back up to the rim or alternately walk west about 500 feet to another weakness where you can also get up to the rim.
  4. Heckle-01          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 37.56943   W -110.64201        Elev: 4,000 Feet

Parking turnout on the left (south) for Heckle and Jeckle Canyons. The road is smooth and in pretty good shape but not well travelled. Park here to go to Heckel and Jeckle Canyons and hike southeast across rolling desert for about 0.32 miles to the top of the cliff band overlooking Heckle Canyon and look for a weakness to scramble down.
