Gear Used for Canyon

Rappelling and anchor gear, Ropes and or pull cords for rappels up to 110 feet and 100 feet of 1 inch webbing for sling placement.  There are a lot of rappels and if a lot of the raps need webbing added it can really add up.  If the canyon has been done recently, you will likely use very little webbing.

Wet suits are required for this route.  Wet suits may not be needed in the upper half of Imlay down to about rap 16 since the swims are generally shallow and short.  From the cross roads down, wet suits are a must.  The trip down in early June we all wore 7mm wet suits and had some pretty chilly moments.  The trip down in mid July we wore 7mm wet suits and thought it was a bit too much.  5mm may have been a better choice for that time of year.  To be safe I recommend 5mm is the minimum thickness wet suit to be used for Imlay Canyon.

General Comments

The sneak route into Imlay Canyon starts up the West Rim Trial from the Grotto Bus Stop in Zion.  The route travels up to Scout’s Lookout then up onto the West Rim Trail.  A little over a mile beyond Scout’s Lookout the route leaves the West Rim Trail and travels north up and over two passes (saddles) then drops down into Imlay Canyon at the Cross Roads.

This route can be done in a long day by those that enjoy traveling fast or may be better suited as an overnight for those wanting to enjoy some time in the canyon with a sleepover in at the Cross Roads.

For more comments concerning this route see the general comments for the full Imlay route.

Details

The Approach:
After getting off the shuttle at the Grotto stop (wGrottoBusStp), walk across the road and start down the trail to Angel's Landing.  The trail starts out flat and easy for a while but soon starts to climb switchbacks as it climbs to Refrigerator Canyon.  Continue on the trail through Refrigerator Canyon.  Next will be a series of 21 short but steep switch backs called Walter's Wiggles (sWaltrsWiglsTp).  A short distance after getting to the top of Walter’s Wiggles you will come to Scout’s Lookout which is about 2.1 miles from the trailhead.  From Scout's Lookout follow the signs at the junction for the West Rim Trail (jWestRimS) pointing to the West Rim Trail (not Angel's Landing).

As you continue up the West Rim Trail you will come to a section of slick rock where it would be easy to lose the trail.  A few sign posts along the slick rock with a boot print on them have been placed to mark the way over to the continuation of the trail.  After crossing the trailless slick rock area, the trail will begin to descend again.  About 1.2 miles after Scouts Lookout the trail will have a bridge (cWstRmBridge) that crosses a stream.

As you continue on from the bridge the trail will slowly begin to climb again through wide open spaces with lots of views to take in.  On the right (north) side of the trail will be a deep drainage roughly paralleling the trail.  About 0.2 miles after crossing the bridge, the deep drainage will be less deep and easy to cross over (jImlaySneak).  This is where you will leave the trail.  Leave the trail and walk north across the drainage.

After crossing over the drainage that paralleled the West Rim Trail, you will see a large wide open drainage running to the north in the direction you are walking.  Staying high on the left (west) is easy travel along slick rock.

A little over 0.25 miles after leaving the West Rim Trail, the large drainage splits into 2 parallel drainages continuing north.  The contour of the slick rock will soon force you down into the western of these two drainages.

Note:
Staying high on the slick rock until forced down to the drainage below helps with navigation.  If you drop down too early it can be a bit confusing to find the proper drainage easily.

After dropping down into the western drainage, look for a way to climb up onto the ridge that divides these two drainages.  There will be a path running north along the crest of the ridge between the drainages (wImlaySnkRP-01).  The path is actually slight west of the crest of the ridge.

Follow the path north along the 2 parallel drainages.  After about 500 feet the path becomes very well defined and easy to follow.

About 0.5 miles along the path on the ridge between drainages the trail comes to an abrupt stop (wImlaySnkRP-02).  The trail drops down a steep dirt slope about 60 feet and into the drainage on the right (east).  The drop down is steep and soft dirt winding down through trees and bushes.

Once down in the drainage on the right (east), follow up the drainage to the north.  There are multiple paths that lead up and out of the drainage to avoid obstacles.  Some are helpful, others are not.  Follow up the drainage using whatever path looks best for a little over 500 feet to a fork in the drainage (wImlaySnkRP-03).

Follow the path leading up between the two forks.  The path will shortly drop back down into the left (west) of the two forks.

About 0.2 miles from the fork in the drainage is the top of the first climb on a saddle (wImlaySnkRP-04).  This saddle is about 1.3 miles from where you left the West Rim Trail.

From the top of the saddle (wImlaySnkRP-04) start down the slope on the other (north) side.  Dropping down will be very steep and loose dirt.  About 300 feet later the slope begins to level off in a section of the ravine that has a lot of ferns and other vegetation.  This is a pretty section, take time to enjoy it.

A little over 600 feet from the saddle will be a drop of about 25 feet that is bypassed on a short path LDC.

About 250 feet after the drop to bypass the drainage you are in T’s into another drainage (wImlaySnkRP-05).  To the right (east) is downhill and to the left (west) is up hill in the drainage.

Note:
This drainage is known as Not Imlay Canyon.  To continue the Imlay Sneak Route turn left and walk upstream in the drainage.  To leave the Imlay Sneak Route and start down into Not Imlay Canyon, turn right (east) and walk down canyon.

Turn left (west) and start walking up the drainage.  About 450 feet up the drainage is a wall of about 35 feet that stops travel up the wash.  About 100 feet before reaching this wall will be a path on the left (west) that will lead up the side of the drainage and up to the top of the wall.  If you miss the path, back track about 100 feet to find the path.  If you want to climb the wall, it is possible to climb up the right side then traverse across the top of the wall to get over it.  This is sketchy and not recommended.

From the top of the 35 foot wall (wImlaySnkRP-06), climb up the very steep dirt ravine.  A short distance up the ravine turns to slick rock and continues steeply up to a dirt covered saddle.  The slick rock is very steep.  If you do not feel like climbing up the steep slick rock you can claw your way to the top in the dirt to the right of it.  Near the top of the slick rock the ravine goes back to dirt with a defined path leading to the top of the saddle (wImlaySnkRP-07) which is about 400 feet after the top of the 35 foot wall.

Continue down the north side of this second saddle.  The slope down is very steep and full of loose dirt.  After about 600 feet the ravine begins to level off a little and presents a few sections of scrambling to get around obstacles.

About 0.35 miles down from the saddle the drainage takes a sharp left (wImlaySnkRP-08).  As it turns left there is a drop of about 30 feet.  Bypass this drop by climbing up and over RDC and not turning with the drainage. Then scramble back down into the drainage on the other side.

The drainage is easy and semi flat walking for about 800 feet after the bypass.  Then the drainage begins to widen out and drop more rapidly with a few down climbs along rock fall debris.  Near the end of this down climb section is a larger drop with a couple of large logs jammed overhead forming a V shaped bridge over the canyon.  Bypass this drop on a path LDC.

About 150 feet after bypassing the drop with the logs overhead, there will be a drop of about 50 feet that is not down climbable and over hung (wImlaySnkRP-09).  To bypass this drop, back up about 300 feet to find spot you can climb up the RDC side of the drainage and traverse down canyon toward a wide open slick rock slope.

Note:
Here is a better idea than traveling down canyon looking for the non-downclimable drop then backing up.  Just keep an eye on the RDC side and note when the canyon wall seems to be getting significantly lower and looks like it might open up on the right.  When you see this look for a spot to climb up and begin traversing the RDC side down canyon up onto the wide open slick rock area.

After getting up to the wide open slick rock, the wall on the other side of Imlay is impressive and very "in your face".  Walk north down the slick rock slope toward Imlay Canyon until you reach a drop off.

From here you have two options:

Option one:
Turn left (west – up canyon) and cross over the drainage you have been traveling down by a pour off.  After crossing the drainage it is a short traverse along a dirt path to a steep soft dirt slope down a small side drainage to the floor of Imlay Canyon.  This is the lower portion of the Cross Roads Area (wImlayCrossRds).

Option two:
Turn right (east - down canyon) and look for a sloped section of slick rock you can scramble down to the canyon floor.  This will put you on the floor of the canyon just below rap 19.  There is also a great alcove for camping there as well as a pool that generally has plenty of water to filter.  Keep in mind that water is not guaranteed.  Plan on having some extra with you just in case.

GPS Waypoint Information

In the future I may start to have GPX files for down load but not quite yet.

Most GPS units and mapping software use the common gpx file format including Google Earth.

National Geographic TOPO! hides the feature to import GPX files.  To find the feature........
1.  Click on "Handhelds" in the menu at the top.
2.  Select the option for "Import (from GPS or .txt) Wizard..
3.  Select "In a .gpx file....... and click on Next
4.  Use the window that opens to navigate to the GPX file you wish to open.

Garmin MapSource will open a GPX file in the same way it opens other formats by simply using the File then Open.

If you wish to convert between formats to get your data from one software title to another you can use the free GPSBabel software.

Elevations are approximate.  Waypoints with no elevation data will display NaN in place of the elevation.  Elevations are in meters so multiplying by 3.28083 is necessary to get elevations in feet.

The first letter of a waypoint denotes the type of point.  Rappels start with d.  Technical top and bottom of canyons start with y.  the letter w denotes a generic point.  Scenic spots start with s.  Trailheads start with t.  Junctions of trails or canyons start with j.

Notes for GPS information:
Waypoint coordinates are listed with WGS84 datum and in Lat/Lon hddd.ddddd° format.
Waypoints are  listed alphabetically by waypoint name (not in order on the route).

BEFORE entering coordinates from this website, please ensure your system (GPS or mapping software) is set to the same datum used here (WGS84).  Entering coordinate information with inconsistent datum's can result in the waypoints being off by hundreds of feet.  It is important to keep this in mind when entering waypoints from any source.
